How Kia Makes every mile count
Kia Motors Corporation was founded in 1944 in Seoul, South Korea. Originally a manufacturer of steel tubing and bicycle parts, they started production of Korea's first bicycle in 1951. It was also in 1951 that the company was officially named Kia Industries. Kia continued through the years producing many of Korea's firsts including their first motor scooter, first motorcyle, first truck and first cargo truck.
Kia Enters U.S. Market
It wasn't until 1991 that Kia Motors announced their plans to enter the U.S. marketplace and debut the Sephia compact sedan along with the Sportage Sport Utility vehicle. Kia Motors America was incorporated in October of 1992 and by 1993 they signed on their first 20 dealers to begin selling vehicles in the U.S. It was only the following year that the Sephia outsold the Dodge Neon and Mazda Protege in eight cities and by 1995 Kia's 100th dealer opened.
Kia Starts Receiving Awards
They doubled their annual sales from 1994 to 1995 and were awarded such honors as "Best of What's New" by Popular Science. The 1997 Sportage was rated "The Best Buy" among compact sport utility vehicles according to the Men's Journal 1997 Buyer's Guide. Kia sold it's 100,000 vehicle in 1997, launched Kia.com and snagged "Best Overall Value of the Year" by IntelliChoice for the Sportage.
Hyundai Takes Controlling Interest In Kia
Hyundai Business Group took controlling interest of Kia Motors Corporation in 1998 and together in 2003 they opened a new design center in Irvine, California. By this time they had already introduced the Rio and Sedona as well as the Sorrento to their line up of vehicles and continued to win awards such as Best Overall SUV Value, Best Van and Best in Class. The Sorrento earned Kia's first 5 star crash rating in 2003 from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. Kia has continued through years to improve on design and safety always working to bring you the best value.
